Vander Boegh v. Bechtel Jacobs Company (False Claims at Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant)

Former Bechtel Jacobs employees Gary Vander Boegh and George Johnson alleged that the company improperly handled and disposed of radioactive waste at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky. The men claimed that Bechtel Jacobs billed DOE for services related to waste removal that was improperly handled as “nonhazardous”; improperly stored “no radiation added” waste at the Paducah plant and disposed of it at a different site despite the existence of a less expensive alternative; and disposed of waste that contained excessive amounts of free liquids. In August 2012, Bechtel Jacobs and the government settled the lawsuit for $230,000. The settlement did not require Bechtel Jacobs to admit fault related to violations allegedly occurring from 1998 through 2004.
