Kashagan Oil Field Environmental Fine

The government of Kazakhstan fined an international oil consortium developing the Kashagan Caspian Sea oilfield $737 million (134.2 billion tenge) for an environmental violation. Kazakhstan’s environment ministry fined the Agip KCO consortium, which includes ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell, alleging that in September and October 2013 the project had flared 2.8 million cubic meters of toxic “sour gas” (gas rich in hydrogen sulphide) that resulted in pollution of the atmosphere.
