Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant Safety Deficiencies

Bechtel National agreed to pay the Department of Energy (DOE) $800,000 to settle potential design and safety noncompliances at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) in Hanford, Washington. DOE investigations in 2012 found deficiencies in (1) the content and usage of existing procedures, having nuclear safety implications, for plant design and safety-basis development; and (2) the area of quality improvement.
