Improper Federal Contract Billings Through Misclassified Costs

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) paid $14.9 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by knowingly misclassifying certain costs, resulting in inflated overhead rates paid to the company on various federal government contracts. The government alleged that, between fiscal years 2007 and 2011, SNC misclassified certain direct contract costs and manufacturing and production engineering costs as independent research and development (IR&D) costs, and charged certain IR&D costs in the wrong cost accounting period.
