St. Clair County, Illinois CERCLA Site Cleanup

In February 2017, the Department of Justice lodged a proposed consent decree in a lawsuit filed under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) against several companies, including ExxonMobil Oil Corporation. The lawsuit sought recovery of environmental remediation costs incurred by the government at the Sauget Area 1 site in St. Clair County, Illinois. From 1917 to 1970, ExxonMobil’s predecessor, Mobil Oil Corporation, owned and operated a refinery near Sauget Area 1, at which it produced gasoline, kerosene, and other fuel oils. The companies agreed to pay a total of $475,000 in costs and to complete remediation work, expected to cost $14.8 million.
