Torrance Refinery Nuisance Lawsuit

Residents of Torrance, California sued Exxon Mobil alleging an ongoing nuisance stemming from a February 2015 explosion at a refinery, which Exxon sold the following year. According to the plaintiffs, when the refinery was put back into operation in May 2016, hundreds of pounds of particulate emissions were released due to a lack of proper controls and years of neglect. Further, they allege multiple “flaring events”—the burning off of natural gas—have occurred since the restart, causing the spread of additional pollutants.
