Angola Pollution Fine

Angola’s Ministry of Fisheries and the Environment fined ChevronTexaco $2 million for oil spills from an offshore platform that polluted beaches and damaged the local fishing industry. A government investigation found that leaks from poorly maintained pipes used to transport crude oil from platform were the cause of the spills. Chevron, which pumps almost three-quarters of Angola’s oil, reportedly promised to invest $108 million to replace the pipes.
