Oak Ridge National Lab – DoE Inspector General Report

The Department of Energy Office of Inspector General issued a report showing that UT-Battelle, the operating contractor at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, incurred unreasonable costs related to Battelle-managed scientific conferences between October 2005 and September 2007 and misspent funds on such prohibited items as alcohol, cigars, gifts and entertainment. The report found that Energy was overcharged $606,000 on meals alone. During the time period in question, UT-Battelle did not request or obtain Energy’s approval prior to holding a number of these conferences, in violation of regulations.
