Y-12 National Security Complex Security Breach – Show Cause Letter
In July 2012, three anti-nuclear activists broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and were able to reach the outer bounds of the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility. Two weeks later, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) issued a “show cause” letter to Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Y-12 (B&W Y-12) outlining specific lapses that it believed led to the incident and giving the company 30 days to show why its contract should not be terminated for default.
