Illegal Transportation, Storage and Handling of Hazardous Waste in California

Federal Express Ground Package paid $1.75 million to settle an environmental lawsuit filed by 16 California county prosecutors. The lawsuit alleged that FedEx illegally transported and stored hazardous waste, failed to adequately train its employees regarding the proper handling of the waste, and failed to appropriately dispose of the waste. Under the final judgment, FedEx agreed to pay $1.5 million in civil penalties; $155,000 in reimbursement to investigative and law enforcement agencies; $85,000 for a supplemental environmental project; and $10,000 to inform its customers of waste minimization techniques and improved packaging.
