Groningen Quake Zone Property Owner Compensation

A Dutch court ruled that Royal Dutch Shell-Exxon Mobil joint venture NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) must compensate homeowners for property value loss due to earthquakes linked to production at the Groningen field. Hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings lie in the affected area, which covers a large part of the northern Netherlands. The ruling could result in billions of dollars in claims. NAM issued the following statement to POGO: “We recognize the concerns of the people living in the Groningen region regarding the loss of value of property due to the risk of earthquakes caused by gas production. The situation in the Groningen region is unique and we acknowledge that in specific cases property prices are influenced by the risk of earthquakes due to gas production. We have been compensating inhabitants who have sold their property for a lower price due to the risk of earthquakes with a housing depreciation settlement scheme since 2014. We will now study the considerations of the court and deliberate on further possible actions.”
