Manatee County v. URS Corporation (Lake Manatee Cofferdam Project)

In January 2015, a Florida jury awarded Manatee County, Florida, $2.17 million in damages in a lawsuit accusing URS Corporation of negligence in designing a cofferdam to keep the Lake Manatee Dam’s spillway dry during repair work. The jury found URS 65 percent responsible for the cofferdam’s failure and another company not a party to the lawsuit 35 percent responsible (the final amount was correspondingly adjusted to $1.4 million). Manatee County claimed that URS committed professional malpractice by failing to perform an adequate analysis of the lake soil into which the cofferdam’s base was installed.
