Unlawful Conditions at Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility

A class action lawsuit alleged that the teenagers and young men held at the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility in Leake County, Mississippi lived in barbaric, unconstitutional conditions. In 2003, the state subcontracted with Cornell Companies, Inc. to manage and operate the facility. The GEO Group assumed operations when it acquired Cornell in August 2010. The suit alleged that staff members abused their authority by selling drugs to the youth held at the facility, brutally beating and mistreating them, and engaging in sexual relationships with them. The lawsuit was settled in March 2012.
